Though Annapolis has a plethora of historic homes, the Chase-Lloyd House is a must-see. Built in 1769-74, this home belonged to Samuel Chase, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Best-known for its spectacular interior design, only the first-floor rooms are on view as the house is a presently a home for retired women. Though touring the house is a good deal at $2, hours are limited.

Although this house has only 11 rooms, it's well worth a visit. Formerly the home of Clara Barton, the Glen Echo residence showcases the Red Cross founder's dedication to her cause. Built in 1891, the home's design is unusual featuring halls lined with closets filled with blankets, lanterns and other disaster relief supplies. Barton's office is of particular interest. Always working for her cause, Barton cut the back off of her chair to discourage resting. Glen Echo is a fascinating glimpse into this prolific woman's life, and visitors of all ages will find a visit well worthwhile.

Of all the historic homes in Annapolis, the Hammond-Harwood House is perhaps the finest. The classic Georgian archicture by William Buckland is magnificent as are the home's art collections. The house is named for two familes, but exhibits include pieces from each of the home's three centuries. The fine art collection is one of Maryland's finest, and the collection of 18th-century furniture, handicrafts and textiles is impressive. Tours of the home last about 45 minutes.

For a piece of authentic United States history, look no further than the Maryland State House. Serving as the US Capitol from 1783 to 1784, this historic site is the location for a number of groundbreaking events in US history including the ratification of the Treaty of Paris effectively ending the Revolutionary War. Maryland's General Assembly still meets here from January through mid-April, but visitors may take free guided tours at 11am or 3pm to see the old and new chambers and exhibits.

What trip to Annapolis would be complete without visiting the US Naval Academy? Enjoy strolling through the beautiful grounds of this historic college founded in 1845. Though visitors should now call ahead for entrance restrictions, guided tours are available.
